Denise Yamada

 Robert Santos

A little more than a week to go and excitement is building for the Eighth Annual Asian Heritage Awards.

Here are a few exciting developments to share with you. This year’s gala ceremony will be emceed by San Diego veteran TV personalities Denise Yamada and Robert Santos, who will be joined by a roster of blockbuster entertainers, many of them new to the San Diego scene, which promises to make this an exciting night. Before we report on a few things in store for Saturday, August 20, at Paradise Point Resort in Mission Bay, we want to take the opportunity to share some of the well wishes and acknowledge-ments that have been coming in for all our nominees and The Asian Heritage Society, as well as C.C. Yin, our Special Recognition Recipient and Rear Admiral Ron MacLaren, who will receive the first Diversity Pioneer Award.

From Kiran Ahuja, executive director of President Obama’s White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders: “…I send my warmest congratulations to the Asian Heritage Society for its 8th Annual Asian Heritage Awards. I applaud the Asian Heritage Society for its achievements in promoting an understanding of Asian American and Pacific Islander experiences through media and education, and additionally, recognizing passionate Asian American and Pacific Islander leaders and organizations who are paving the way for our community and making a difference.”  For more, click on link

From Congresswoman Susan Davis:  “I commend the Asian Heritage Society for its commitment to promoting diversity, leadership and cultural understanding through your diverse programs, workshops and forums.

As a member of Congress, I appreciate your work to host the Asian Heritage Awards…For more, click on link

From Congressman Bob Filner:  “The Special Recognition Award for C.C. Yin, aka “Asian Mr. McDonald’s,” the founder of Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association, and the Diversity Pioneer Award for Rear Admiral Ron MacLaren…are well deserved and honors their hard work and sacrifices.” For more, click on link

From  Admiral Gary Roughead, Chief of Naval Operations, U.S. Navy: “Your commitment to building future leaders and preserving the legacy of the Asian Pacific Islander community is commendable, and I thank you for your continued support.” For more, click on link

From Yeon-Sung Shin, Consul General of the Republic of Korea: “Rear Admiral MacLaren’s achievements and recognitions are vast…He has bravely served his country and is an exceptional role model for all Americans….Taking this opportunity, I’d also like to congratulate the Asian Heritage Society on their Eighth Annual Asian Heritage awards Ceremony. You deserve our gratitude and commendation for all you have done to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of Asian Americans.” For more, click on link

To these heartfelt tributes, there are warm messages from California Secretary of State Debra Bowen, California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, Vice Chairman of the County Board of Supervisors Ron Roberts, State Board of Equalization Vice Chair Michelle Steel, San Diego Councilman Carl DeMaio, California State Senator Joel Anderson and San Diego County District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis For more, click on link

We take great pride in such recognition and share it with all of the nominees for this year’s Asian Heritage Awards, who represent a great assembly of talent and achievement. We are, indeed, proud to host this event on Saturday, August 20, for them.

The stage is set. And gracing that stage will be two household names to emcee the night – Denise Yamada and Robert Santos.

Sainu (Lilly) Ma

Dan Yu

Becca Tang

This marks a return for Santos, who emceed the Awards gala last year, and a rare media appearance by Yamada, who left broadcasting to teach career and leadership development.

Yamada worked as a correspondent and host for ABC-TV’s “Good Morning America” before joining the San Diego television scene, where she became one of the most trusted and influential news anchors for 17 years.   Leaving a stellar career, in which she interviewed personalities ranging from Bill Clinton and Henry Kissinger to Lucille Ball and the Rolling Stones, Yamada took the skills she honed as a journalist to coach business leaders, individuals and organizations to enhance their careers and enrich their lives.

Among a host of accomplishments, she is founding member of Voices of Women, a women’s group dedicated to creating a voice for peace and justice worldwide, and has served as chair of the San Diego chapter of the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS. She has also contributed to Wayne Dyer’s best-selling series Wake Up…Live the Life You Love!, as well as to the future of this country by raising two beautiful children.

Santos has worn many TV hats, as reporter, anchor and weathercaster, since coming to San Diego in 2000 to work for KFMB Channel 8, then later KSWB Channel 5.

As a reporter, he provided live coverage of some of San Diego’s major news events, including the series of Southern California wildfires, President George Bush’s famous “Mission Accomplished” speech aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, the tragic murder of young Danielle Van Dam and the ensuing David Westerfield trial and the Santana High School shootings. In addition to being named “Reporter of the Year” by the Associated Press Television Radio Association, he has held TV reporting stints in Salinas, Monterey, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Seattle and Guam, where he was born and raised and where, he says, he hopes to return some day to live by the beach.

Yamada and Santos will be joined on stage by the Moonlight Chinese Dance Troupe, a group of professional women dedicated to preserving and sharing Chinese culture through their rendition of traditional dance from throughout the country. Also performing will be children from the Xingjian Dance Studio in San Diego, coached by Rose Liu, and 9-year-old Cady Mariano, whose dance performance recently won her first place in the Spotlight National Dance Competition held in Las Vegas.

In addition, excerpts from musical “Romance of the Western Chamber,” based on an ancient Chinese play, will be sung by soloist Becca Tang and the duo of Dan Yu and Sainu (Lilly) Ma. A graduate of UCLA with a bachelor’s degree in music education, Tang is a private music and voice teacher. Ma is a professional vocalist from China specializing in both traditional Chinese songs as well as contemporary Western music. Yu, who was also born in China and is also a UCLA graduate, has studied singing with bass-baritone Jay Yang and teaches piano.

To Experience Last Year's Asian Heritage Awards

JOIN US AUGUST 20, 2011 TO CELEBRATE ASIAN AMERICAN ACHIEVEMENT & CULTURE

Support ongoing projects that aim to preserve the cultural legacy of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and the development of leadership and mentorship programs

Achievement. Accomplishment. Heritage. Legacy.

The Asian Heritage Awards embodies these and more.
Awards are not just an approval rating. They are a compilation of many things. They celebrate accomplishment, and they also celebrate how an individual or organization connects with the community. That's why these awards are unique. The Asian Heritage Awards are an opportunity for the community to learn about an individual or organization’s work and appreciate it by acknowledging it as part of a voting process. All the nominees you see here and in the pages of the May 22-29 edition of  ASIA, The Journal  of Culture & Commerce, were nominated by their peers or individuals familiar with their work.
Our API community in Southern California, in San Diego, Los Angeles and Orange County, indeed, thought so much of these individual accomplishments that they wanted to share them with others.
To individuals and organizations, foremost, represent achievement. What they have accomplished is their legacy to their children, grandchildren and the community that has nurtured them. It is a testament to their accomplishments that so many are represented here this year – double the candidates in 2009
Our nominees  are educators, doctors, lawyers, scientists, artists, corporate leaders, community activists, journalists, engineers, writers, philosophers, scientists, singers, playwrights and pioneers of every kind. They are of Vietnamese descent, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino, Korean, Laotian, Asian Indian, Taiwanese, Indonesian, Thai, Tibetan, Hawaiian, Polynesian.           To us, there can be no more appropriate time for role models like these.
We are on the verge of change, looking for those who confirm that a path to service is a worthy one. That is why our choice for special honors this year – CC YIN– is so important.
He and the other individuals and organizations represented here are the best and brightest of our API community and the greater community of human kind.  We salute them all.   We thank the nominators and, above all, the nominees, who have placed their trust in us to help share their achievements and to celebrate them with the world..
