ANNIE HAN NGUYEN’S passion for journalism was sparked more than 10 years ago when her sister’s career in broadcast news took off. Annie spent a summer accompanying her to work and shadowing other professionals at a Sacramento TV news station.
Following that summer, she put her journalistic penchant to work for her middle school and high school newspapers, serving an internship for a local TV show and becoming one of the most active members of the San Diego chapter of the Asian American Journalist Association. Last fall, as an intern for NBC in Washington, D.C., she wrote columns and news articles depicting the political climate in the mid-Atlantic Vietnamese community and described the significance of the political involvement of college-age Vietnamese-Americans during the 2004 presidential election. Consequently, she and her colleagues from Orange County’s Viet Weekly earned a New California Media Award in January in the category of Best Advocacy Voice for their special elections package.
