ASIA launches 2nd newspaper - in L.A.
Asia Media Inc., publishers of ASIA, The Journal of Culture & Commerce, will launch a second newspaper in the fall exclusively devoted to serving the Asian Pacific Islander community of Los Angeles. The company currently publishes a 20,000 circulation community newspaper twice a month in San Diego County.
The new venture is the result of a partnership between ASIA publishers Leonard Novarro and Rosalynn Carmen and Phamatech Inc. of San Diego founder and CEO Tuan Pham and his wife, Jacqueline. Both newspapers will have a total circulation of 80,000 and a projected readership of 360,000, making the combination one of the largest of its kind serving California's Asian and Pacific Islander communities.
ASIA continues to be the only Southern California publication for and about the entire Asian Pacific Islander community, from the largest, Filipino, to the smallest, Brunei.
While the new publication, ASIA, Los Angeles Edition, will contain some of the features of ASIA's San Diego edition, business, arts and community news will focus on L.A.s Asian Pacific Islander community, with its 2.8 million population being the largest in the country. The Los Angeles edition will also have its own calendar of events and web site devoted to news and events in Los Angeles.
"We have tested the market several times with excellent results," said Leonard Novarro, ASIA's publisher and vice president of Asia Media Inc. "But with L.A. being four times larger than San Diego, we realized we needed added resources to grow strategically. |
|
Now, through this partnership with one of San Diego's most highly successful and dynamic business leaders, Tuan Pham, and his wife, Jacquie, this dream will now be a reality."
Like its San Diego counterpart, the Los Angeles edition will be in English, serving the fastest growing and most affluent Asian Pacific Islander demographic – second, third and fourth generation Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.
According to U.S. Census Bureau figures released earlier this year, 63 percent of all Asians over the age of 5 in the U.S., citizens or otherwise, speak only English; 80 percent speak English very well and 90 percent fairly well.
"With Asian Americans being the fastest growing demographic in the country – 15 percent a year – and English speaking second generation plus Asian Americans being the fastest growing segment within that demographic, a community newspaper in English is THE tool to communicate among segmented communities to build a sense of inclusiveness instead of separateness," Carmen said.
Asia Media Inc. was formed to publish ASIA in San Diego in June 2002 and launched its first edition Oct. 11 of that year. Since then, the newspaper has grown from 5,000 every three weeks to 20,000 twice a month, with a 24 percent market share. The Phams and Novarro and Carmen announced the new venture at the conclusion of the Asian Heritage Awards ceremony held at the University of San Diego on Tuesday, May 22. According to Carmen, L.A. will also have its own Asian Heritage Awards.
