When the world is flat...
The world, indeed, is flat.
Mention outsourcing and you hear all kinds of claims about American jobs being stolen by China, India and other countries in Asia. But for much of San Diego's pharmaceutical industry, outsourcing is a financial necessity.
"Competition is everywhere. With prices going up and salaries going up, it would be prohibitive to get drugs to the market" without turning outside the United States for cheaper labor and less costly trials, said Scott Saika, CEO of Ambit Biosciences in San Diego.

Phamatech, the San Diego-based manufacturer of rapid medical diagnostic devices, was recently awarded a major multi-million-dollar contract to provide drug tests for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Until now, such tests were provided on an average of once a year. Under the new program, tests can be administered monthly and, thus, expected to go a long way to bring drug problems in the system under control. Neighborhood troops gathered at Ericson Elementary School to celebrate World Thinking Day, an annual Girl Scouts and Girl Guides holiday in honor of scouting pioneers Lord and Lady Baden Powell. World Thinking Day reminds the girls they are connected to 10 million sister Scouts in more than 140 countries.
